What to Expect
Program Overview
Flexible Counselling Psychology board exam preparation options to fit your schedule and needs
Comprehensive Preparation
This course is designed to provide comprehensive, structured, and contextually relevant preparation for the South African psychology board exam.
The approach is grounded in clarity, integration, and exam-focused learning, rather than rote memorisation.
Content is broken down into manageable sections that mirror how information is tested in the board exam, with a strong emphasis on understanding core concepts and applying them ethically and practically.
The course integrates theory, legislation, ethics, and real-world clinical reasoning to help interns feel confident and prepared.
Teaching is scaffolded to support different learning styles and levels of confidence, ensuring that complex material becomes accessible and meaningful.
The overall methodology is supportive, structured, and practical, aiming not only to help interns pass the exam, but to strengthen their professional identity as competent, reflective psychologists within the South African context.
Curriculum Content
The curriculum covers all major content areas assessed in the psychology board exam, aligned with HPCSA expectations and South African legislation. This includes
- Professional ethics
- Scope of practice
- The Mental Health Care Act
- Children’s Act
- POPIA, and
- Relevant HPCSA rules and guidelines.
Core theoretical frameworks are reviewed with a focus on clinical application, including assessment principles, diagnosis, intervention planning, and professional conduct.
The course also addresses cultural competence, diversity, and contextual practice within South Africa, ensuring students can apply knowledge ethically and appropriately.
Commonly examined themes, recurring question types, and high-yield topics are highlighted throughout.
Content is presented in a clear, organised manner that supports integration across domains, helping interns understand how ethical, legal, and clinical knowledge intersect in real-world psychological practice.
Assessment Preparation
This course places strong emphasis on preparing interns for the format, structure, and demands of the actual board exam.
Students are guided through how board exam questions are constructed, including multiple-choice reasoning, applied scenarios, and ethical decision-making questions.
Practice questions are used to build familiarity and confidence, with detailed explanations provided to clarify both correct and incorrect options.
Attention is given to common pitfalls, exam traps, and misunderstandings that often lead to lost marks.
The course also helps interns develop the skill of identifying what a question is truly asking, rather than overthinking or misinterpreting scenarios. By simulating exam-style thinking and reinforcing strategic answering techniques, interns are supported to approach the exam calmly, systematically, and with confidence in their knowledge and reasoning.
Practical Strategies
In addition to content mastery, the course teaches practical study and exam strategies tailored to busy psychology interns. This includes guidance on how to structure a realistic study plan, prioritise high-yield material, and study efficiently under time constraints.
Students learn techniques for consolidating large volumes of information, improving recall, and integrating theory with practice.
Exam-day strategies are covered in detail, including time management, stress regulation, handling uncertainty, and decision-making when unsure of an answer.
The course also addresses mindset, confidence-building, and managing exam-related anxiety, which are common barriers to performance.
These strategies aim to help interns feel organised, grounded, and prepared — not only academically, but emotionally — so they can perform at their best during the board exam.
Delivery Method
All sessions are conducted live via Google Meet. Individual sessions include email support during the session week and topic-specific materials. Group participants receive priority support throughout the program, group discussions, and complete study materials.
