What to Expect
Program Overview
Flexible Registered Counsellors board exam preparation options to fit your schedule and needs
Comprehensive Preparation
Our approach to board exam preparation is structured, supportive, and grounded in professional integrity. We combine clear legislative and ethical guidance with practical case-based application, helping participants understand not only what to study, but how to think through board-style questions with confidence. Sessions are designed to be engaging and interactive, encouraging discussion, reflection, and real-world reasoning within the Registered Counsellor scope of practice.
While the content is rigorous and aligned with HPCSA standards, the learning environment is relaxed and approachable. We recognise the anxiety that often accompanies board preparation, having navigated it ourselves, and aim to create a space that feels collaborative rather than intimidating. Our methodology focuses on building clarity, competence, and calm confidence, supporting both professional growth and exam readiness.
Curriculum Content
Our curriculum is aligned with the HPCSA Registered Counsellor board exam blueprint and focuses on the areas most likely to be tested. We cover
- Ethics and professional practice
- Assessment principles
- Counselling theories
- Mental health conditions
- Developmental psychology
- Trauma
- Crisis intervention
- Referrals, and
- Multidisciplinary collaboration.
Each topic is taught using clear explanations, real case examples, and simplified memory frameworks.
We also integrate South African legal and ethical guidelines to ensure your answers are contextually relevant. Instead of overwhelming you with dense notes, we focus on high-yield content that helps you understand why something is important, not just what to memorise.
Our aim is to help you think like a counsellor in the exam, not just repeat information. Everything we teach is practical, relevant, and directly linked to how the questions are asked.
Assessment Preparation
We prepare you for the exam by teaching you
- How to understand the logic behind HPCSA questions, and
- How to identify key words, spot ethical traps, eliminate incorrect options, and choose the most appropriate response — even when multiple answers seem correct.
We work through past-style questions together, explaining not only why an answer is correct, but also why the others are wrong.
You’ll practise under timed conditions, learn how to manage exam anxiety, and develop confidence in your decision-making. Because we recently wrote the exam ourselves, we understand the wording style, pressure, and pacing required.
Our goal is to help you walk into the exam calm, clear, and prepared, knowing that you don’t need to be perfect, just strategic and grounded.
Practical Strategies
We teach study techniques that are realistic for working professionals — not methods that only work in theory.
You will learn how to break your study time into manageable blocks, use active recall instead of passive reading, and apply memory tools to retain large amounts of information.
We also show you how to create quick-reference summaries, use case-based learning, and study smarter rather than longer.
Our sessions include guided practice, breakout discussions, and reflection so that learning sticks.
You’ll also gain stress-management tools, focus techniques, and pre-exam routines to help you stay regulated and confident.
We believe preparation should feel empowering, not exhausting. By the end of the programme, you won’t just feel “ready”, you’ll feel capable, supported, and genuinely excited to step into your professional role.
Delivery Method
All sessions are conducted live via Google Meet. Individual sessions include email support during the session week and topic-specific materials. Group participants receive priority support throughout the program, group discussions, and complete study materials.
